Customer Review: a *REAL* generator
First off, I have 4 buildings that run commercial and government test equipment 24/7, alot of this is critical that is never cease operation. A generator alone WILL NOT keep everything running. First order of business is a strong UPS (we use both Hewlett packard 6000 watt UPS systems and APC 5000 watt UPS systems). The UPS doesn’t need to run very long - about a minute at most while the generator heats up, cranks, warms up, and transfers the load to the genset. Once the UPS is confident in the power it drops out and begins charging the batteries to replace the charge it used for the minute while your generator was starting.
Another “feature” you’ll want is a programmable delay in starting the genset - usually 5 to 10 seconds. This takes care of the nuisance trips from the power company reclosers which is when your power goes out for 5 seconds and returns. No since in starting the cutover process for these events since the UPS will handle them flawlessly.
The generators work best when a drunk driver takes out a power pole at 2AM killing your office equipment. After the 10 second delay, your logic assumes it is going to be a “LONG” outage and fires the autostart generator (the water cooled 6 cylinder ford engine here is awesome). Now things switch over and items that are non critical (parking lot lights, building ligts, etc) will return to powered state, while your computers and test equipment on UPS systems doesn’t even know there was a power interruption.
We have some labs that have hazards (chemical exhausts that must run 24×7x365) and in those labs we even UPS the lighting in case we are working when a power failure hits. Effectively the entire lab is on one big ups which carries us through. The only way you can tell there was a power failure is the sound of the engine running which is not that loud.
The BEST part of this set is the natural gas supply. We used to run diesel gensets but the contracts to get diesel supplied (at $5.00/gal) in the event of an earthquake etc were just too much. We have NEVER had a natural gas outage simply because the pipelines hold enough gas in them to run the demand for 24 hours even if the supply were turned off right now. We do keep a propane tank on site if natural gas is lost, but it is not a quick changeover, so it is strictly a backup solution to run the ford gas engine.
Finally, your emissions from the engine are clean. Do oil changes every 10 -24 hours of runtime and you will find that the oil comes out as clean as it went in.
The 22,000+ watts this unit produces is enough that you can partner with your neighbors (residential) or businesses next door to purchase the unit and share the expense of running it. Chances are you do not need the full run capacity and can share it with someone else.
We provide power to a Togo’s restaurant next door to our lab. They provide us with free eats in the event of a power failure. It’s a great tradeoff. Even when the street is dark, their lights are on, as our parking lot lamps, so our complex is up and running.
As for ROI - think of the business you loose in one night of power failure. As any business the loss can be huge. This device mitigates that loss and keeps you going. Your customers expect you to be up and running - and in a failure situation will be drawn to you like moths to a light, resulting in increased business since your competition will be out of luck. All of our gensets have paid for themselves in their first 40 hours of operation in lost revenue they prevented.
Just buy the thing.
